Fire! 4 a.m. March 3, 2003

In the early morning hours of Monday, March 3 our shed caught fire.  Fortunately, we were alerted by Daisy in time to keep the fire from spreading to the house!  After a few but exciting minutes in which we realized that the garden hose was a hopelessly inadequate source of water and a quickly abandoned attempt to move the cars, we were able to get into the truck with the dogs and drive to the neighbors house to call for help.

We are thankful for our wonderful neighbors and for the efforts of the Kingston and Elkland Twp fire departments.

Also to Daisy for her persistence, she clearly thought something was wrong and wouldn’t let us sleep through it.

Frankly, the neighbors were one of the reasons we chose to live here.  It was clear from visiting with them before we bought that they were good people.  We’ve learned since that they are much better.  There can’t be much more disconcerting than a pounding on your door at four in the morning.  Face it, no one comes to bring good news at that hour.

It’s tough to be roused from sleep in this kind of weather at that hour with a day’s work yet ahead of you.  We appreciate how tough it was on the firefighters and emergency personnel who came to save our home.

Here are some pictures of the morning after the fire.

Remember this lovely view of the pond as seen out beyond the shed?  Oops! No Shed!

Metal roofing, burned out cars, bits of charred paper and cloth……

there’s not much left.

We were lucky that damage to the house was very slight.  So far we have seen the melting of the vinyl siding obvious in the photo below.  This was the worst area.  Apparently, the heat from the fire rose nearly straight up.

If there had been any wind, it would likely have been blowing straight from the shed to the house and would have pushed the fire right into the house.  It was bitter cold ( about 8 below), but still.

The vinyl downstairs warped a little, but not as much as up above.  The only other apparent damage is a cracked window.

This was a computer….

filing cabinet and tea kettle….

It’s quite a mess……

pants hangers…..

the big soap making kettle….  Looks like Maura’s gonna need a new one

We’re safe and sound, the dogs are fine, we still have a house.

Life is good.
